Call for Abstracts
ALPA invites submissions for its 2026 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. Building on its previous annual conferences, the 2026 ALPA Annual Conference will be one of the largest gatherings on Afghanistan studies, bringing together Afghan and international scholars across the humanities and social sciences.
In addition to its regular panels, the 2026 conference will include full paper workshops, an exhibition of publications, workshops on research, publication, and employment, roundtables, book talks, and a side event for networking and socialization. It will offer a valuable opportunity for scholars to discuss questions of common interest and contribute to deeper understanding of issues affecting Afghanistan.
Interested scholars are invited to submit abstracts on any topic related to Afghanistan. We welcome submissions from all fields of the humanities and social sciences. We especially encourage submissions from Afghan scholars, early career researchers, women scholars, scholars in exile, scholars inside Afghanistan, and researchers working in Persian and Pashto.

الپا از پژوهشگران دعوت میکند تا چکیدههای خود را برای کنفرانس سالانه ۲۰۲۶ این انجمن در واشنگتن دیسی ارسال کنند. کنفرانس سالانه ۲۰۲۶ الپا، با تکیه بر تجربه کنفرانسهای سالانه گذشته، یکی از بزرگترین گردهماییها در حوزه مطالعات افغانستان خواهد بود و پژوهشگران افغان و بینالمللی را از رشتههای مختلف علوم انسانی و علوم اجتماعی گرد هم خواهد آورد.
افزون بر پنلهای ارایه مقالات، کنفرانس ۲۰۲۶ شامل همایش نقد و بررسی مقالات کامل، نمایشگاه آثار و نشریات، کارگاههایی در زمینه پژوهش، نشر و کاریابی، میزگردها، نشستهای معرفی کتاب، و یک برنامه جانبی برای شبکهسازی و آشنایی بیشتر شرکتکنندگان خواهد بود. این کنفرانس فرصت ارزشمندی را برای پژوهشگران فراهم میکند تا درباره پرسشهای مورد علاقه مشترک گفتوگو کنند و به درک عمیقتر از مسائل مرتبط با افغانستان کمک نمایند.

Call for Nominations for 2026 ALPA Awards
The Afghanistan Law and Politics Association (ALPA) is immensely pleased to present the 2026 ALPA Awards, which is honoring exceptional authors whose work has significantly advanced discourse on Afghanistan. These prestigious awards recognize individuals whose books and articles have contributed profound insights into the country’s legal, social, and political landscapes. Winners will receive an official certificate of recognition, 100 USD Cash, and their work will be featured prominently on ALPA’s official website, providing a respected platform for wider dissemination and academic engagement.
Outstanding Book Awards
This award recognizes the most impactful and insightful books on law, society, and politics in Afghanistan.
Eligibility Criteria:

Books must be written in (one of these languages) Persian, Pashto, or English.

The subject matter, it must focus on law, society, or politics in Afghanistan.
-
English-language books must have been published between 2024 and 2025.

Books in Persian and Pashto must have been published between March 1., 2024 and July 1., 2025
-
Co-authored books are eligible; however, translations, and unpublished manuscripts will not be considered.

Self-nominations are also welcome.

Outstanding Article Awards
This award recognizes the most compelling and original scholarly articles that provide original and critical insights into Afghanistan’s legal and political landscape.
Eligibility Criteria:

Book chapters are also accepted.

Articles/book chapters must be written in (one of these languages) Persian, Pashto, or English.
-
Articles/book chapters must have been published between March 2024 and September 2025.
-
Submissions must be scholarly articles exceeding 7,000 words.
-
Co-authored submissions are accepted; however, translations are not eligible.

Self-nominations are welcome.

Jonathon A. Eddy Awards
Professor Eddy is the former Program Director of the U.S. State Department’s Legal Education Support Program–Afghanistan (LESPA) and Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Washington. He has dedicated much of his career to advancing legal education and reform in Afghanistan and has supported ALPA’s initiatives since its founding.
In recognition of his contributions to Afghanistan's legal and political science education, ALPA has established an award in his name to honor those faculty members contributing to the advancement of Afghan higher education and scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria:

The nominee must have taught courses at the ALPA Online Academy.

Courses must have been offered during the 2024–2025 academic years.

All ALPA faculty are nominated for this award.
