About the event

Rule Breakers is a dramatic feature film based on the story of Roya Mahboob and the Afghan all-girls robotics team who travelled the globe competing in international high school robotics competitions. The Afghan Dreamers team was founded by Roya Mahboob, a young woman from Herat, Afghanistan, who became a leading force in the country for STEM education for girls. Overcoming staggering obstacles, Roya and her team trained in engineering and robotics and traveled the world to compete. The team became globally famous when they were denied a US visa to attend their first competition in Washington D.C.

After a firestorm of media advocacy, the team was ultimately allowed into the US to compete, and they won an award. Roya and her team then faced searing attacks back home from those who thought girls should be banned from learning computers, traveling, and competing.
