Several weeks after the Taliban retook Afghanistan, I was able to flee to Australia with my elderly mother and four family members, all of whom were under 18 at the time. We escaped a life of fear and uncertainty and stepped toward what I now call our Horizon of Hope.
Beginning a new life was far from easy. Like many refugees, I had to rebuild my life from the ground up while adapting to a completely different environment. My family members had never been abroad, and now they had to learn a new language and a new way of life.
One of the happiest and most unforgettable days of my life was enrolling the girls in their new school. Watching them walk through the school gates filled me with emotions that are difficult to describe. A new spark of hope was born within me.
Throughout my professional life in Afghanistan, I was fortunate to have a father who supported my education and to build strong friendships with people who inspired and supported me. Whenever I encountered challenges, I reached out to trusted friends and mentors for advice. I have never been ashamed to ask questions or admit when I did not know something.
I have always dreamed of making a meaningful difference in the lives of young women and girls. Political instability and social barriers prevented me from achieving that dream in the way I had envisioned, even before the Taliban. Helping these four girls reclaim their education and their future renews that purpose.
My greatest aspiration is to continue empowering Afghan women and girls. I am committed to using my experiences, my voice, and my abilities to support Afghan women and help them build brighter futures.
