This spring, Zahra Tawana graduated with a Master of Public Administration from James Madison University, marking the culmination of a powerful and purposeful two-year journey. As a testament to her outstanding academic and professional achievements, she was honored with the Pre-Service Student Excellence Award, a recognition of her leadership, commitment, and impact as a future public servant.
Her academic success is only one part of the story. At the heart of her graduate studies was a deep commitment to the education and empowerment of Afghan girls. Throughout her time at JMU, Zahra remained closely connected to the Afghan community, dedicating herself to supporting young Afghan women who continue to face unprecedented challenges under oppressive regimes. Their strength and resilience became her greatest source of inspiration, fueling her determination to grow as a public servant and advocate.
Zahra’s final year was particularly rich in experience and learning. She immersed herself in civic engagement, community development, court services, and data analysis, combining academic knowledge with real-world impact. These experiences strengthened her vision of inclusive, justice-oriented public service—one that places marginalized voices at the center.
Her journey was made possible through the support of her family, the encouragement of the ALPA community, and the unwavering courage of countless Afghan girls whose stories shaped her path. Zahra often says that their bravery stood beside her every step of the way, and indeed, it is their fight for education and dignity that gives her work lasting meaning.
Zahra’s graduation is not just an academic achievement; it is a testament to her commitment to justice, equality, and the belief that one voice, when uplifted by a community, can help change the world.
