Call for Abstracts

ALPA invites submissions for its 2026 Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. Building on its previous annual conferences, the 2026 ALPA Annual Conference will be one of the largest gatherings on Afghanistan studies, bringing together Afghan and international scholars across the humanities and social sciences.

Submission Guidelines

  • Language: English, Farsi, or Pashto

  • Abstract length: 250 to 300 words

  • Bio length: 100 to 300 words

  • Deadline (Extended): July 20, 2026, 11:59 PM EDT

Nominate Your Book for ALPA Awards

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Books must be written in (one of these languages) Persian, Pashto, or English.

  • The subject matter, it must focus on law, society, or politics in Afghanistan.

  • The book must have been published between 2020 and 2026.

  • Books that were nominated before for ALPA awards will not be accepted. 

  • Co-authored books are eligible; however, translations, and unpublished manuscripts will not be considered.

  • Self-nominations are also welcome.

  • Deadline (Extended): August 1, 2026

Nominate Your Article for ALPA Awards

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Book chapters are also accepted.

  • Articles/book chapters must be written in Persian, Pashto, or English.

  • Articles/book chapters must have been published between January 2020 and July 2026.

  • Submissions must be scholarly articles exceeding 7,000 words.

  • Co-authored submissions are accepted; however, translations are not eligible.

  • Self-nominations are welcome.

  • Deadline (Extended): August 1, 2026

Showcase Your Publications

As part of an exciting new initiative, we will host a Publication Exhibition to showcase the latest academic work in Afghanistan studies and related fields. We warmly welcome submissions of your recently published books, edited volumes, journal articles, book chapters, and other relevant scholarly materials. Our aim is to broaden awareness of your work among a diverse audience of scholars, practitioners, and students.
