Plenary Panel I (Afghanistan Journal): "Afghanistan: A Neglected Reality"

This plenary panel examines Afghanistan as a neglected political, social, and historical reality after decades of war, intervention, state building, collapse, and international fatigue. Bringing together leading scholars and practitioners, the panel asks why repeated efforts at governance and nation state building in Afghanistan have failed, how centralization has shaped political exclusion and democratic weakness, and what lessons can be drawn from past interventions and alternative models of governance.
The discussion will move beyond narrow crisis narratives and situate Afghanistan within broader debates on legitimacy, state formation, external intervention, institutional design, and social fragmentation. Panelists will reflect on the failures of both domestic and international actors, the consequences of centralized political authority, and the continuing need to understand Afghanistan on its own historical and social terms. Together, the presentations invite a deeper conversation about Afghanistan not as a forgotten case, but as a critical site for rethinking governance, democracy, and international responsibility.
