Plenary Panel: Gender Apartheid: A Multidimensional Analysis
The Afghanistan Law and Political Science Association, ALPA in Exile, is pleased to host a plenary panel titled “Gender Apartheid: A Multidimensional Analysis” during the 2026 ALPA Annual Conference at American University in Washington, DC.
The panel will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 3:30 to 5:00 PM ET. It will bring together scholars, researchers, and advocates to examine gender apartheid in Afghanistan from legal, political, cultural, and intersectional perspectives.
The panel will feature presentations by Omar Sadr of Princeton University, Aryana Mahmood of the Australian National University, Nazeela Elmi of the Afghanistan Accountability Collective, and Tahmina Sobat of the University of Minnesota. Their presentations will address questions of cultural relativism, women’s legal advocacy after 2021, intersectionality, and transnational feminist solidarity.
The discussion will be enriched by Halima Kazem of Stanford University as discussant and moderated by Meetra Mehran of the End Gender Apartheid Campaign.
This plenary panel features papers from the joint special edition of the Stanford Journal of International Law, facilitated by the Stanford Program in Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies and the End Gender Apartheid Campaign. The session reflects ALPA’s commitment to serious scholarly engagement on gender apartheid and to supporting conversations that connect research, advocacy, law, and public accountability.
