Tawab Danish, an ALPA faculty and IIE-SRF Fellow, was invited by South Asian Program of Cornell University to speak about the persecution of Hazaras and Shias under the Taliban rule. The event took place on March 25, 2024, titled Hazaras and Shias: Violence, Discrimination, and Exclusion Under Taliban Rule.
Danish highlighted the historical discrimination these minorities faced and the brief period of inclusion they experienced during the Republic Regime. However, the Taliban's return to power brought back persecution. Danish argues the persecution of the Hazaras by the Taliban violates international human rights standards and could destabilize Afghanistan.
To address the issue, Danish proposes a two-pronged approach. First, he suggests pressuring the Taliban through sanctions to respect the rights of Hazaras and other marginalized groups in Afghanistan. Second, he advocates for raising awareness on social media to garner support for the rights of Afghan minorities.
